Our Response to COVID-19

Background

COVID-19 also known as “Coronavirus” is an infectious respiratory disease. The COVID-19 virus primarily spreads through droplets of saliva or discharge through the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms may include a fever, a cough or breathing difficulties. Symptoms can take 14 days to appear. Symptoms in the majority of cases can be mild, but in cases where an individual has underlying health condition or for older people, the symptoms can be more severe.

People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales. These droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. People can also catch COVID-19 if they breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or exhales droplets. Therefore, it is important to stay more than 2 metres away from a person who is sick.

EDUCATION, AWARENESS AND REGULAR COMMUNICATION

As with many organisations, one of the first measures implemented focussed on raising awareness of preventative measures to avoid the spread among colleagues. This includes information surrounding basic hygiene measures, such as frequent cleaning of hands using soap and water or hand sanitiser; covering the nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Colleagues are continuously reminded of these measures via regular internal communication, both via email and through a dedicated COVID-19 section on our website.

The COVID-19 section of our website is updated daily so that our teams and visitors to the site have access to the latest information and guidance surrounding the virus, and its impact.
